He is, in fact, being quite foolish. They’ve covered this in the comics. They didn’t cover it, y’know, really often, so he may never have seen it. But he’s had a beard before. He has bodily functions like that. He ‘shaves’ it off using his heat vision reflected off of, get this, a polished piece of the metal from the ship he came to earth in. The idea is that the metal is supposed to be strong enough to withstand it, being Kryptonian This is bad science, but if we start giving an earnest critique of the science of superhero movies, we’re lost anyway. Or we’re in for a lot of hilarity, depending on the subject matter.

So yeah. Sorry, Conan. This has been covered. You still have to see it. I mean, I knew you were going to anyway, but I’ll let you pretend for a little while that you weren’t going to.

We had a walk-off 14-13 win today, bringing us to 4-3, and guaranteeing that we can’t have a sub-.500 record. I don’t know yet if that’ll be good enough for playoffs, but I’m a-hoping!

We played with enormous spirit, coming back to win after being down 12-3. Every member of our team stepped up, and we had some highlight reel plays. Alex G (we have two guys named Alex on our team, and they’re roommates!) made a wonderful jumping catch in the early innings, and I took part in my very first double play, a 3-3-2 double play on a grounder from a lefty batter right to me, throwing home to get the runner trying to score.

I got 3 hits in 5 at bats (although the other two were the ones I hit hardest, just…right at the center fielder), drove in at least 4 runs, and scored 2 runs myself, including the tying run.

I had a very good game, as did the rest of the Dukes, and I am so very proud of my team.

Yes, the Sherlock fandom tends to be loud and obnoxious enough that a lot of people would know. But I still consider it pretty obnoxious that it’s just generally assumed. The Sherlock fandom at its extremes is, in my opinion, one of the most obnoxious fandoms out there, and I grew up in the fandom that contains the subjects of the documentary “Trekkies”.

I seriously just had to teach my mother some basics of parenting.

Both photos are of my daughter in October, the first in 2011, the second in 2012. I let her pick out her own clothes, shoes, haircuts, hair colors, anything superficial, really. She’s too young to understand the permanence of piercings, so she doesn’t have any. But hair grows, shoes get grown out of, clothes go threadbare. These things don’t really matter—shouldn’t really matter—but anyone raising a gender-variant child knows the world isn’t that kind.

My daughter recently requested a haircut like mine. A long flop on top, pixie-length fade on the back and sides. She’s been bugging me for weeks to color her hair again, I just haven’t had the time. But today she came to me with the same shyness she keeps developing when outside our home; she’s being pressured by peers and family to look “normal,” to grow her hair long and uncolored, to dress a certain way (she hates to match), to indulge in self-consciousness, and alter or not alter her appearance to gain the approval of others, and society at large.

THIS FUCKING INFURIATES ME.

I called my mother tonight, because my daughter had become shy again, and didn’t want to color her hair anymore, and she said it was because of what her Nana had said to her. My mother told me we should get that spray-on Halloween hair colors, so it wouldn’t be so “permanent” and my daughter could be “normal” again to avoid being bullied.

IT IS NOT THE JOB OF THE VICTIM TO STOP BEING BULLIED. IT IS THE BULLY’S JOB TO STOP BULLYING.

I know she gets teased sometimes, and we always talk about it. She stays strong and confident, so long as she has the support of those around her. But what that support falters, or pulls a 180, she’s left to crash.

She also gets teased for liking dinosaurs and not dolls. She gets teased for preferring roughhousing to playing house. She gets teased for liking Lightning McQueen and not Cinderella. Where do we draw the line?

My mother thinks this is a “minor” thing, that it’s better to just blend in. But it would plant the seed of doubt, it forms the foundation for queer kids staying in the closet, for disabled kids to feel worthless, for young girls accepting abusive partners. This is not “minor,” it is fucking MAJOR, because this is my daughter’s foundation, and it will shape her life.

Support your fucking kids. Let them be who they want to be, look how they want to look, and play how they want to play. And make sure they know that you will love them no matter what.

Except it’s not the horizontal axis. It’s the Y-axis, the vertical one, that they’re reflected along. That’s the one that runs perpendicular to your eyes, so maybe that’s why?

the vast majority of m/m slash shippers I have known in my decade of fandom have been queer women. maybe it’s because, gee, I don’t know, the strongest non-het relationships in most media are between men. I’d have more femmeslash ships if I fucking had more female characters who actually appear together in the same goddamn scene, let alone talk and form meaningful relationships of any kind.

as media is now, you are more likely to find interesting and nuanced canon relationships between men than you will find between women. (let’s also remember that girls are trained from a young age to relate to male characters - through assigned reading in school to the main characters in their favorite books and cartoons. male characters are more fleshed out and get more screentime and are emphasized more and are thus more relatable for a lot of women.)

punishing queer women for the media’s lack of queer women (and women in general) is fucking ridiculous. the fact that most fandoms have more m/m slash than femmeslash is a negative reflection of media and societal norms, NOT necessarily the people in the fandom. fandom is reflective of this shit, not the cause. fandom trends are only symptoms of a larger problem. I will say this as many times as it takes: M/M FANDOMS ARE LARGELY FEMALE SPACES AND PUNISHING THEM FOR MEDIA AND SOCIETAL NORMS THAT HARM THEM IS FUCKING STUPID AND HELPS NO ONE

Or the Supernatural fandom. Or at least the fringes of it. I started watching Supernatural after I saw a whole lot of tumblr stuff about it, so I already knew about Destiel, and I went in with it, and…I ship it. But the amount of Wincest I’ve seen on tumblr troubles me.

Actually, just the amount of incest I’ve seen in fanfiction in general troubles me. The poor Winchesters and Weasleys, man. Not cool. I’m 100% down with m/m slash. I am not down with incest.

I’m sorry, I got off track. I think all of the m/m shippers I know of pretty much all fandoms are female, unless I’m forgetting someone. However, a significantly large proportion of them are/were (I’m not in contact with all of them anymore) straight, as far as I know/knew. I feel like this is more specifically a problem with straight men. This is my suspicion. I don’t have hard data to back it up though.
