I know you will just say I told you so…

But Community is way better than Big Bang Theory.

I actually really don’t like Big Bang theory. I did the first few times I saw it, but once I started thinking about it, I realized it’s the geeks and nerds who are being made fun of. Once I thought of that, I couldn’t unthink it, and it was all I thought of every time I saw it. How many of the main characters on the show are any kind of socially astute? In my year in the Honors College at Stony Brook, we had a ton of incredibly smart people, and there were maybe two in my year who were any kind of close to that socially awkward. Maybe. Yeah, they have some fun references, but it feels to me like they’re in there to get the reaction “Hey, I totally know somebody like that!” I’m not knocking anybody who enjoys the show, but I feel like it’s just enforcing stereotypes about smart people, and it isn’t funny to me anymore.

I don’t think the characters in Big Bang are supposed to represent all the geeks ever.  But yeah, it got old for me after awhile.

There’s a distressing underrepresentation of socially acceptable smart people on the show though. I know they exist on the show, it’s not as bad as it could be, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
